Honda Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles
Hondas are some of the most common vehicles on the road today. Those in the market for a new or pre-owned vehicle look to this automaker for affordable SUVs and compact cars that provide exceptional cabin room, steady handling and reliable engine builds.
At Freedom Motors, we designed our first handicap vehicle for sale back in 1987 and released the first wheelchair accessible SUV – the Honda Element – in 2006. Since then, we perfected our process to convert models like the Honda HR-V and the Element for families and caregivers.
The Honda HR-V
Honda HR-V variants grew popular as they prioritize fuel efficiency and comfort. These two-door subcompact vehicles offered a similar aesthetic to the CR-V at a lower price point.
While this model was discontinued in early 2021, a wheelchair accessible HR-V integrated a manual wheelchair ramp into the back of late-model HR-Vs with the help of Freedom Motors, the only converter of the accessible HR-V. Using the 34″ rear ramp, wheelchair users entered and exited the vehicle via the hatchback door in seconds with technology that lets you use a key fob for operation.
Notable features of some of our Honda HR-V models with wheelchair ramps included:
- Cruise control.
- Heated bucket seats.
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
- Deep tinted glass.
- Roof rack rails.
- Rearview cameras.
The Honda Element
The SUV converted for wheelchair accessibility was the Honda Element, and Freedom Motors USA created it in 2006. Drivers in search of a compact crossover SUV flocked to the Honda Element for a comfortable driving experience. Known for their boxy shapes, Honda Elements had removable back seats and offer four-wheel drive for off-road conditions.
Freedom Motors channeled years of industry experience to convert Honda Elements for wheelchair users. While extremely popular, the Element was discontinued by Honda; and Freedom Motors discontinued the wheelchair accessible conversion in 2011.
