How to Get a Handicap Parking Permit

If you have limited mobility, you can save time and energy by parking in handicapped parking spots — but those spots aren’t available on the honor system. While each state has different rules for getting a handicap parking permit, there are lots of similarities.

Check Your Eligibility

Plenty of people don’t even know they’re eligible for a handicapped parking permit, and differing requirements by state and even by city can make this tougher. The best thing to do is make an appointment with your doctor. Speak candidly about your condition and how a permit might help. If you’re eligible, your doctor can help.

Check What’s Available

Permits differ between states; some offer license plates with permanent handicapped symbols, while others use a placard to hang on your rearview mirror. You can also get long-term and short-term permits. If you’re a veteran with a service-connected disability, you could be eligible for a disabled veteran permit.

Apply for Your Permit

Look at your local DMV website and read up on the application process before printing out an application. You apply for yourself instead of your car, so you can always cover several cars at once. It usually takes around a month for the application to be processed and the relevant tags or plates to be sent out, so act accordingly if you’ll need a temporary permit after scheduled surgery.

Use Your Disabled Parking Permit Properly

Make sure you read all the rules carefully to understand where you can park, whether the permit-holder needs to be in the car, rules for dropping off and picking up, and so on. You don’t want to inadvertently commit handicapped parking fraud. You’ll also need to check on expiration dates and whether the plate or tag will be automatically renewed or if you’ll need to take care of that yourself.
